God Is Building a Family, Not Just Giving You a Baby

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labour. If either of them falls down, one can help the other up… A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

—Ecclesiastes 4:9–12

Expecting your first child is one of life’s most beautiful experiences. It is exciting, joyful and, if we are honest, a little frightening too.

The moment people hear that you are expecting, the advice begins:

“Sleep while you still can.”

“Enjoy your freedom now.”

“Your life is about to change forever.”

Some may even jokingly say, “Yaar, vaat lag gayi!”—your peaceful life is over!

Most people speak from their own experiences. Their journey may not necessarily become your journey, but there is always something valuable to learn from those who have walked the road before you.

However, preparing for a baby involves much more than learning how to change diapers, soothe a crying child or survive sleepless nights.

There is a deeper truth to remember:

God is not only giving you a baby. He is building your family.

A baby does not simply change your home. A baby also changes your marriage. God’s desire is that this new season will draw you closer to Him and closer to one another.

Joseph and Mary: A Couple Chosen by God

Joseph and Mary provide one of the most beautiful examples of a couple trusting God through an unexpected season. When the angel appeared to Mary, everything changed. She was going to become the mother of Jesus.

Imagine the questions that may have filled her mind:

“Am I ready?”

“How will people react?”

“Can I really do this?”

Joseph was facing his own struggle. He did not fully understand what God was doing, yet he chose to trust God and stand beside Mary.

There is something beautiful in their story.

God did not ask Mary to walk alone. He gave her Joseph.

God did not ask Joseph to carry the responsibility alone. He gave him Mary.

They faced uncertainty together.

They travelled together.

They worshipped together.

They protected Jesus together.

They trusted God together.

That is a picture of Christian marriage.

Marriage is not the union of two perfect people. It is two imperfect people choosing to walk together while trusting a perfect God.

1. Stay United

The greatest gift you can give your child is not a perfectly decorated nursery, expensive clothing or the latest baby equipment. It is a healthy marriage. Your child needs to see a father who loves his wife and a mother who respects her husband. Before your child learns about love from the world, let them see love demonstrated at home.

There will be sleepless nights. There will be stress, disagreements and moments when both of you are physically and emotionally exhausted.

During those moments, be patient with one another. Remember that your spouse is not the enemy. The challenge in front of you is the problem you are facing together.

Fight the problem, not each other. You are on the same team.

2. Pray Together

Joseph did not have all the answers. Mary did not have all the answers. But they trusted the One who did. Make prayer a regular part of your marriage and your home.

Pray before the baby arrives.

Pray after the baby arrives.

Pray when you are tired.

Pray when you are joyful.

Pray when you feel confident.

Pray when you do not know what to do.

Your child may one day forget many of the toys you bought, but they will not easily forget seeing Mom and Dad praying together. A child who grows up watching their parents pray learns where true hope, strength and peace come from.

3. Remember Whose Child This Is

Psalm 127:3 says:

“Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.”

Children are gifts entrusted to us by God. This precious life is being placed in your care, but ultimately, your child belongs to the Lord. Your greatest responsibility is not to make your child famous, wealthy or admired by the world. It is not even simply to make your child successful. Your greatest responsibility is to lead your child toward Jesus.

Teach your child to pray.

Teach your child to love God’s Word.

Teach your child to show kindness, compassion and forgiveness.

Most importantly, allow your child to see that your faith is not something you practise only at church. Let them see that Jesus is at the centre of your everyday life.

If your child knows Christ, they possess life’s greatest treasure.

A Word to the Husband

Your wife is carrying much more than a baby. She is carrying hopes, dreams, physical changes, emotional changes and sometimes fears that she may not know how to explain.

Joseph protected Mary. He listened to God, accepted responsibility and stood beside her during a confusing and difficult time. Be that kind of husband.

Be present.

Be patient.

Listen without always trying to fix everything.

Support her practically and emotionally.

Sometimes the most powerful words you can say are:

“I am here.”

“We will get through this together.”

“You are not alone.”

Your presence and reassurance can become a source of tremendous strength to her.

A Word to the Wife

God chose you to be the mother of this child—not because you are perfect, but because His grace is sufficient for you. Mary trusted God before she understood everything that was happening. You do not need to have every answer. You simply need to know the One who does. Trust God in the joyful moments and in the uncertain ones.

Lean on your husband. Allow him to support you and carry the burdens you were never meant to carry alone. Marriage is a partnership. You are not competing with each other. You are working together to build a home where your child can feel safe, loved and spiritually grounded.

Prepare More Than a Nursery

As you wait for your baby’s arrival, you may be buying clothes, decorating a room, choosing names and dreaming about the future. Those things are wonderful.

But do not forget to prepare something even more important:

Prepare your marriage.

Laugh together.

Pray together.

Forgive quickly.

Communicate honestly.

Encourage one another often.

Make time for each other, even after the baby arrives.

One day, your child may ask, “What does God’s love look like?” Before they ever open a Bible, they will look at Mom and Dad.

They will watch how you speak to each other.

They will observe how you handle disagreements.

They will notice whether forgiveness is practised in your home.

They will learn about faith by watching how you respond during difficult seasons.

May they see Jesus reflected in both of you.

Keep Christ at the Centre

People often say, “It takes a village to raise a child.” There is truth in that. Families need supportive relatives, friends, churches and communities. But for a Christian family, it begins with something even stronger:

A husband, a wife and Christ at the centre.

The cord of three strands described in Ecclesiastes reminds us that a marriage becomes stronger when God is woven into every part of it. When Jesus is at the centre of your marriage, your home becomes more than a house. It becomes a place where faith grows, love is practised, forgiveness is lived out, and your child learns who God is.

So do not only celebrate the baby God is giving you. Celebrate the family He is building through you.

May God strengthen your marriage, deepen your love for one another and use your home to reflect His glory for generations to come.

Amen.
